Position Summary
Purpose of the Job
Fire Engineering and Emergency Preparedness consultancy. Provide fire protection management and implement preparedness, response and recovery protocols within the Refinery.
Required outputs: Functional
- Perform studies to assess fire risks and make recommendations to management on how to mitigate these risks;
- Ensure that an effective emergency plan exists for the refinery and that it is frequently practised via simulated exercises;
- Liaise with external specialists organisations in the field of Fire prevention;
- Ensure that regular formal fire prevention inspections and audits are carried out on fire protection facilities to ensure that the facilities are operational.
Where the Chief Fire Officer is unavailable, it will be required by the Divisional Officer to act as Chief Fire Officer focussing on the following responsibilities:
- Ensuring the effective 24 hour management of the Natref fire protection service including the management of resources;
- Respond and take command of the fire fighting and rescue services/resources during emergency situations;
- Perform an advisory role to all managerial levels with fire protection/prevention issues. (i.e. Maintain frequent contact with customers in all areas);
- Ensure that the section complies with all statutory requirements as a Designated Fire Service as prescribed by the Fire Brigade Service Act as well as compliance with all other legal requirements.
Job Requirements
- National Diploma in Fire Technology equivalent to NQF level 5 with 240 credits;
- Code EC1 License
- Basic Ambulance Assistant certificate (HPCSA)
Specific experience required
- 5 Years’ experience in the Emergency Services of which 2 years in an Industrial Fire Services
- 2 Years’ experience in Fire Engineering
- Knowledge of process equipment
General
- Knowledge and experience in fire technology (i.e. fire fighting media and equipment e.g. fixed installations, mobile and portable associated with petrochemical industries);
- Knowledge and experience in emergency planning and management;
- Familiar with applicable statutory requirements e.g. Fire Brigade Service Act and SABS codes;
- Ability to assess fire protection, fire prevention and emergency management measurements as well as procedures/practices and initiate interventions where necessary to improve;
- Knowledge in auditing as well as conducting fire risk and root cause analysis;
- Ability in maintaining a suitable administration / record-keeping system associated with the scope of the fire protection functionary;
- Ability to conduct meetings, provide presentations and co-ordinate the fulfilment of activities and targets/goals.
