    Agricultural Training Instructor (Mechanical) (Fixed Term Contract)

    Context

    The Shukela Training Centre is the flagship of training excellence for the sugar industry and provides training to the sugar industry and learners throughout Africa. The increased demand for our services has enabled us to offer an employment opportunity on a fixed term contract basis to a suitable candidate.

    Role

    Reporting to the Agricultural Training Supervisor, the successful incumbent will be responsible for providing specialised mobile skills-training to employees and Growers in all Kwa-Zulu Natal cane growing sectors in order to enhance profitable and sustainable sugarcane production in South Africa and the SADC Region.

    Key performance areas of this position include:

        Training agricultural workers in all practical aspects of tractor care and tractor driving as well as calibration of fertilizer distribution equipment
        Removing and disassembling tractor engine, transmission, and clutches, using hoists, jacks, and mechanic's hand tools. Replacing or repairing worn or damaged parts
        Training learners in practical arc welding, oxy-acetylene welding, welding of aluminium irrigation pipes and supervisory and basic workshop skills courses, including tractor maintenance to support the Sugar Industry
        Training learners the basic hand skills and use of common hand and power tools used in farm workshops
        Training learners how to set various tractor drawn implements to enhance operational efficiency
        Conducting assessments of all learners after training, marking them and handing them to the supervisor weekly, as portfolios of evidence of the training
        Training learners in selected sugarcane husbandry aspects to complement the mechanical skills offered
        Preparing equipment and other material required for doing specific skills training courses
        Keeping accurate records on courses conducted and does follow-up on these courses in order to minimise response time to any queries.
        Collecting all data required for certification of learners in the field in an efficient manner, completing the required attendance register and ensuring that the customer completes the required feedback form to ensure authenticity of attendance and certification
        Monitoring the maintenance of the vehicle assigned
        Liaising with employers on their training requirements and adapting the course where necessary to provide these requirements
        Advising management of any changes in training requirements on farms
        Liaising with key stakeholders to enhance efficient delivery of training (GSO).

    The Requirements

        Proficiency in isiZulu, and able to read speak and write other Nguni languages
        Be able to work competently with MS Office
        Have a valid, unendorsed driver's license
        A Diesel/Motor Mechanic N2 qualification or equivalent;
        At least three years industry experience in a similar function / related experience

    Added advantages will include having completed an Assessor Certificate and a Senior Certificate course in sugarcane.

        ground preparation, seeding and harvesting, spray technology, post-harvesting and transport equipment
        the application of scientific agricultural knowledge in farming
        designing, developing and managing the manufacture of agricultural machinery, equipment and instrumentation
