Job Title: Workshop Manager

Background Information

The Workshop Manager will be responsible for the overseeing, smooth running and effectiveness of the AA’s internal workshops nationally which carry out minor repairs and general maintenance of the Emergency Rescue Services fleet. In addition the workshop manager’s duties will include but are not limited to tasking and managing, mechanical and electrical maintenance; administration and workshop operations. Ultimately the Workshop Manager will be responsible for the full productivity and profitability of the workshops, including technical staff.

Job Objectives

    To hire and supervise all workshop personnel, as well as monitoring their performance in servicing internal customers.
    To provide leadership and supervision for reporting workshop staff to meet business unit deliverables.
    To encourage workshop staff to keep their skills up-to-date through periodic technical training on new systems and components offered by the automotive manufacturers.
    To develop, implement, or evaluate maintenance policies and procedures.
    Together with the Logistics Planning & Projects Manager, improve, develop and implement processes and procedures to improve workshops.
    To read, interpret and review maintenance manuals, service bulletins and other specifications to determine the feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.
    To provide accurate and factual reporting, including maintenance of equipment registers.
    To maintain repair logs, documenting all preventive and corrective fleet and workshop maintenance.
    To determine and manage schedules, sequences, and assignments for work activities, based on work priority, quantity of tools and equipment, and skill of  personnel.
    To plan work procedures, using charts, technical manuals, and experience.
    To assist workshop mechanics in respect of the scheduling of repairs and ensure that schedules are adhered to as far as possible. Follow checklists and  record findings, to ensure all-important parts are examined.
    To ensure that all workshop tasking and operations are undertaken in a safe, efficient, cost effective and professional manner.
    To ensure that workshop operations’ productivity are maintained in accordance with work schedules.
    To monitor employees' work levels and review work performance.
    To inspect, test, and measure completed work, to verify conformance to standards or repair requirements; monitor and action non-compliance.
    To conduct or arrange for worker training in safety, repair, or maintenance techniques, operational procedures, or equipment use.
    To compute estimates and actual costs of factors such as materials, labour, or outside contractors.
    To ensure that workshop facilities are maintained and all equipment and assets are serviced and maintained in a safe, efficient and professional manner.
    To ensure that equipment in the workshop is promptly repaired and serviceable for workshop staff to operate in a safe manner.
    To conduct routine and special inspections as required by regulations.
    To inspect completed work to certify that maintenance meets standards and that fleet vehicles are ready for operation.
    To confer with Team Leaders to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems.
    To examine vehicles, compile estimates of repair costs, and secure approval to perform repairs.
    To discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements with applicable Team Leaders.
    To investigate accidents or injuries and prepare reports of findings related to workshop repairs and/or maintenance.
    To manage and develop own performance in line with agreed measurements (PACE).
    Any other related duties as required by the Logistics Planning & Projects Manager from time to time.


Job Knowledge

    Basic knowledge of related workshop legislation (e.g. OHS Act).
    Knowledge of ISO standards will be advantageous.
    Codes, policies, regulations and procedures related to the company.
    Organisational structure and functioning.
    Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
    Sound, up to date automotive mechanical knowledge.
    Working knowledge of IR/BCEA.
    Sound knowledge of management practices.

Job Experience

    Extensive technical background/experience is required.
    On the bench experience as a motor or diesel mechanic is required.
    Previous experience (3 – 5 years) as an automotive workshop manager at a premium branded dealership is essential.


Education

    Grade 12 is essential.
    A management (or similar) certificate/diploma/degree will be advantageous.
    Motor or diesel mechanical qualification.
