Biomaterials Laboratory Officer - SAIAB
The South African
Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity invites applications from suitably qualified
South Africans for the position of BIOMATERIALS LABORATORY OFFICER
The South African
Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB), based in Grahamstown, is a National
Research Facility of the National Research Foundation. SAIAB is world-renowned
centre for the study of aquatic biology, with particular emphasis on ichthyology
in Africa.
Purpose
-Manage and
maintain procedures involved in material Bio-banking
-Cataloguing
of materials into the Biomaterial Bank system and vouchers into the main
collections systems
-Order,
monitor and maintain materials needed for both the biobank facility and the
collections division.
-Train staff
and students in varied bio-material methods.
Requirements:
·
A minimum of a BSc Honours degree is required.
·
An MSc will be an advantage
·
Knowledge of one or more of the following
disciplines acquired through graduate studies in biological sciences: zoology,
biochemistry, microbiology or genetics
·
One year experience in one of the following:
molecular laboratory work, molecular coursework and research, wet collection
curation and data management.
·
Good organizational, administrative and
communication skills.
·
Meticulous attention to detail.
·
High level of computer skills.
·
Database management experience.
·
An ability to work in both a collaborative
environment and independently
·
Experience in any of the following: biomaterial
banking, molecular laboratory techniques (e.g. DNA purification, PCR and gel
electrophoresis), GIS, systematic knowledge of aquatic animals, collection
management and wet specimen curation will be advantageous.
