Geology Department Chief Technical Officer Job at Rhodes University in Grahamstown


Job Title: Chief Technical Officer: Geology Department

Job Purpose:

The purpose of the job is the management and administration of technical services to the Department.  This includes managing the staff and the infrastructure in the laboratories including the rock thinning section facility, workshops and vehicle pool within the department. Also responsible for the general infrastructure of the building

 Requirements:

A relevant Technical Degree (3 years of study) OR be in possession of a trade (preferably in Engineering) plus 6 to 7 years relevant experience where such experience includes: -
·         Previous technical experience, preferably in engineering and/or a relevant science field including experience in working in labs and workshops
·         Previous technical design experience
·         Previous general maintenance experience and/or ability. This will be assessed at the selection stage through a work sample.
·         Previous experience working within a computerized administrative environment.
·          A working knowledge of spreadsheets, plus familiarity with word-processing, e-mail and the internet.
·         Previous experience working with budgets
·         At least one year’s supervision experience OR be in possession of an RU Supervision certificate.  Candidates who do not have the supervision experience or the RU Supervision certificate will be required to complete the Rhodes University supervision course as part of their probation requirement. 
·         Failure to obtain the Supervision certificate will mean that the appointment cannot be confirmed.
·         A valid code 14 driver’s licence is necessary along with a valid PDP licence and is a condition of employment for this post. 
·         Candidates that are not in possession of the necessary licences will be expected to obtain them during their probation period.  
·         The Institution will be responsible for the costs involved in obtaining the necessary licences.  Failure to obtain the necessary licences will mean that the appointment cannot be confirmed. 
·         A valid first aid certificate. 
·         If the job incumbent does not have a valid first aid certificate they will be expected to obtain one during their probation period. 
·         The institution will be responsible for the costs involved on obtaining the certificate. 
·         Failure to obtain the necessary licences will mean that the appointment cannot be confirmed.
Development Post:
-This post can be filled at the developmental level and the requirements for the position are:
-A relevant Technical Degree/Diploma (3 years of study) OR be in possession of a trade (preferably in Engineering) PLUS 5 years relevant experience where such experience includes:.

-Previous technical design experience

Candidates appointed at the development level will be appointed at a percentage of the basic salary below until such time as they meet the minimum criteria in terms of the years experience required for the post and assuming that they are working to the standards that are required and outlined in the job profile.
