Main Purpose of Position:

To ensure a coherent social media approach for SABC News and the effective dissemination of news and current affairs content on and between all the News Division’s social media profiles; to actively monitor, moderate and engage with audiences and communities across these platforms; and to drive and measure social media growth in the context of the objectives and mandate of SABC Digital News.

Key Accountabilities:

•    Take the lead with social media efforts within the News Division to extend content reach and grow audiences, ensuring a consistent and strategic content mix across all social media platforms.
•    Establish social media operational procedures and guidelines to ensure that SABC News social media profiles are regularly updated, maintained and managed; and to enhance social media outputs by reporters, desks and programmes.
•    Guide units and desks to interact with users/audiences on social media by monitoring and contributing to ‘conversations’ around SABC News content; and elicit usable user generated content.
•    Manage and direct Digital News social media profiles as key elements of the SABC News digital strategy and online presence.
•    Monitor and moderate comments and submissions from users across Digital News social media profiles.
•    Examine social media trends and develop innovative ways to improve and popularize SABC News digital and broadcast services via social media.
•    Integrate social media elements into multiplatform production initiatives, such as social media slots and tickers on TV.

Qualifications and Experience:


•    Journalism or media related degree or similar qualification, with a specialization in digital media/online news/social media.
•    Three years’ experience with managing social media profiles and communities within the media industry, with proven evidence of using social media to achieve traffic/growth objectives and a good understanding of the social media landscape.
•    Excellent working knowledge of social media publication, monitoring and analysis tools, software and dashboards to manage and measure social media efforts. 
•    Sound news judgment and news/current affairs general knowledge and good English language, editing and copywriting skills.
•    Evidence of personal online and social media presence. 


Unique Requirements:

•    The ability to work under pressure in a rapidly changing real-time news environment, as a team player and in collaboration with and across various business units.
•    Flexibility to do shift work on a rotational basis, including early mornings, late nights and on weekends; and to work longer than normal hours when required.
