REPORTING LINE : NEWS IT MANAGER
MAIN PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Effective and efficient integration of all Newsroom Systems Hardware and Software and operational training and support to users in order to provide stable, reliable and secure systems to customers in line with SABC business requirements.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Ensure that TV, radio, web, and mobile journalists and producers are equipped with facilities that enable them to create, view, edit stories, rundowns and on-air playouts
• Ensure 100% availability of Server hardware and Newsroom broadcasting systems.
• Update backups at all times and restore datasets.
• Update software and Operating System version as per customer functionality.
• Full alert and standby in studios prior and during broadcasts to monitor operational status and provide operational/ technical support.
• Proactive steps to ensure full systems integration to prevent on air faults.
• Effective trouble shooting and emergency procedures to ensure fast and effective rectifying of faults.
• Full compliance with Disaster Recovery Plan for News.
• Ensure critical availability of key spares/ equipment/ consumables and maintenance of appropriate stock levels
• Ensure that newsgathering becomes more connected and collaborative as information is collected from diverse sources, including serial wire feeds, file transfers, satellite feeds, and network shares
• In time and accurate processing of approved news material for foreign news agencies in accordance with laid down procedures
• Keep abreast of latest technical development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure
• Assist with infrastructure installation for special events, e.g. elections
• Effectively visualize technical faults and provide effective remote solutions to customers
• Functional operational advice and support to all news staff/ relevant stakeholders
• Monitor implementation of policies for the use of the newsroom applications
• Full compliance with relevant SOP’s to ensure laid down newsroom production standards
• Accurate setup of security policies for users in line with user duties
• Customers handled in a professional and friendly manner
• Continual liaison with customers and key stakeholders to understand needs and proactively coordinate interfaces
• Effective trouble shooting and emergency procedures to ensure fast and effective rectifying of faults
• Proper analysis of daily fault reports to proactively identify & address non-compliance
• Proper setup of user access and security
• Updated records/ documentation on configuration
• Accurate retrieval of FTP news video material in accordance with laid down procedures
• Ensure competent transfer of identified skills & knowledge in accordance with job mentoring best practice
• Hands-on, practical, formal user training in Newsroom Systems operations to equip customers to a level of competency required by the Newsroom to improve day-to-day operation of systems
• Compliance of contents with Newsroom workflow specifications
• In time and accurate preparation of user desktops for training purposes
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Relevant IT Diploma or Comptia / Microsoft certification
1 to 2 years relevant Broadcast experience within an IT corporate environment
Experience in a similar environment will be an added advantage
Knowledge of Project management
Be able to work independently and as part of a team
