Job Title: Data Journalist
Location: eNCA Online Department in Johannesburg
Reporting to the News Editor, eNCA Online your key performance areas will include:
Staff and manage a data journalism team within the online division of eNCA
Produce and coordinate data-rich, investigative stories and interactive graphics that engage readers while maintaining eNCA’s standards of accuracy and integrity
Source and drill into data sets to support eNCA investigations: discover data resources, manage data import, oversee data validation
Work closely with graphic artists, designers, video journalists, reporters and editors to find the story in the data and bring it to life across both television and online platforms
Oversee public records requests, working with in-house and external counsel where necessary
Use social media extensively for sourcing, verification and/or promotion of content, working with the social media team where required
Requirements:
Insatiable intellectual curiosity
At least five years’ experience as journalist with a portfolio of data journalism projects
An extensive contact list
A broad understanding of data analysis and Web application development
Razor-sharp news sense and mastery of storytelling
Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams
Experience with the full lifecycle of data journalism projects including pitching stories; identifying data requirements; sourcing, verifying and cleaning data; directing the design of interactive info graphics and/or videos; writing and subbing copy.
Ability to work within a team, collaborating and communicating effectively with people of varying technical levels
Relevant tertiary qualification
Valid driver’s license
Advantageous:
Working knowledge of graphic design, data visualizations and UI design
Understanding of statistical methods and techniques
Basic or advanced front-end coding ability, ideally using open source tools and platforms
