Commissioning Editor: Education - Public and Nation Building
(Salary scale code 300- Position ID 60001033)
Main purpose of the position:
To plan, coordinate and manage the commissioning and production of quality Public Education Television and Radio programmes, from origination and conceptualization through to the delivery of the final product (TV, Radio, Digital and Outreach), ensuring compliance with SABC Education’s Vision, and SABC editorial policies and procedures.
Key Accountabilities:
• Provide editorial leadership on Educational and Public Service Provider expectations;
• Plan, budget and commission programmes to ensure the production of quality Public and Nation Building Education innovative programming within the mandate prescribed by the Broadcasting Act;
• Ensure adherence to SABC editorial policies and procedures;
• Envisage multimedia projects and new innovations;
• Provide effective input to the Education Units strategic planning;
• Take overall editorial responsibility and ensure that programmes are delivered as commissioned and satisfy SABC Editorial Policies and standards;
• Manage and co-ordinate stakeholders and sponsorship relationships;
• Ensure alignment between Education mandate and SABC channels and stations strategy;
• Ensure the delivery of quality programmes, in accordance with agreed performance standards and timeframes and to adhere to the editorial code of conduct and legal compliances;
• Cost effective compliance, utilization and management of allocated budget;
• Co-ordinate and implement ancillary services including print, digital, research, outreach and marketing;
• Conceptualize programme ideas, evaluate proposals, develop and write briefs for the Public Education Unit;
• Providing effective project management from conceptualization to post implementation;
• Delivering project elements according to time, budget, quality, client and industry specifications;
• Ensure utilization of research and sound financial information in all decision making processes;
• Develop project plans, ensuring comprehensive coverage and specification of time deliverables and costs;
• Provide monthly reports to management and report to steering committee in respect of project progress against implementation plan;
• Continually monitor project deliverables against set project plan;
• Ensure the effective and optimal deployment of appropriate technology, in accordance with industry and SABC standards;
• Manage the commissioning process, to ensure delivery according to specifications;
• Monitor and manage project risks;
• Determine the success and impact of projects through regular research and feedback on ratings and audience share;
• Keep abreast of educational, informative and entertainment trends locally and abroad.
Requirements:
• Appropriate degree in Education/Media Studies/Management or equivalent;
• 3 - 5 Years relevant Television production and or broadcasting and management experience;
• Above average communication skills (both verbal and written);
• The ability to initiate and drive as well as organize, plan and control is critical to ensure efficient operations;
• Ability to effectively work with independent producers;
• Ability to strategize in a competitive environment;
• Knowledge of commissioning processes and the allocation of resources to reach objectives on time and within budget;
• Understanding of Educational policies and programmes;
• Ability to make sound editorial judgments; have problem solving abilities;
• Knowledge of the Public Education sector:
- Knowledge of radio and television as broadcast media
- Knowledge of other digital/social media elements will be an added advantage;
• Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, and Power Point);
• Good project management skills and experience;
• Ability to act on research and to understand local and global broadcast trends;
• Willingness to travel;
• Valid driver’s license;
• A keen sense of deadlines is essential;
• Understanding of the target audiences.
