Commissioning Editor Job at SABC in Johannesburg



Job Title: Commissioning Editor (Factual)
[Scale Code 300 – Position ID 60007250]

The SABC is committed to creating a diverse slate of factual offerings as part of its public service mandate. Factual Programming at the SABC creates social dialogue and popular factual propositions

Key Accountabilities:
•    Plan, budget and commission programmes to meet the network’s scheduling requirements
•    Provide effective input to the channel’s planning
•    Provide creative direction for the Network’s output
•    Take overall editorial responsibility for programmes, and ensure that programmes are delivered as commissioned and satisfy SABC editorial standards
•    Establish and maintain effective relations with independent producers and industry bodies
•    Liaise with and develop projects, advise and assist in selecting talent and ensure delivery according to contractual obligations with the independent production industry
•    Ensure that projects are made in accordance with statutory regulations and corporate policies and guidelines (including equal opportunities and health and safety), advise the independent production industry accordingly and ensure programmes comply with legal, contractual and copyright requirements
•    Work closely with the other SABC areas (research, marketing and sales) to maximise audience share and income generation
•    Apply corporate policies, especially to programme commissioning
•    Ensure that commissioning meets mandate targets
•    Ensure that the audiences are satisfied with Factual programme offerings
•    Act as an editor/editorial advisor on programs for broadcast
•    Keep abreast of entertainment trends locally and in the international market
•    Give creative input into the Factual portfolio’s present programs and to imagining new programs


Requirements:
•    Strong editorial skills
•    A minimum of 5 years television production experience in a responsible capacity
•    Extensive experience in Natural History and/or Social and Political documentary filmmaking
•    Post-matric qualifications or experience
•    Knowledge of Formats
•    Good project management skills and experience
•    The ability to strategise in a competitive environment
•    Ability to act on research and to understand local and global broadcast trends
•    A broad understanding of the broadcasting industry with specific knowledge of content in a chosen genre
•    Ability to work with clients and suppliers effectively
•    The ability to initiate, drive and manage projects
•    A keen sense of deadlines is essential
•    Be a good communicator, motivator and problem solver
•    PC literacy is essential (Ms Word, Excel and Power Point)
•    Ability to work independently and in a team
•    Must be willing to travel
•    Valid driver’s licence
•    Integrity and Rigour
•    Understanding market research and the application thereof
•    Creative flair
•    A broad understanding of productions and technology
