Area Manager, Cape Metro
CapeNature seeks to employ an Area Manager, Cape Metro, based at the Driftsands Nature Reserve, with a Salary of R587 357 per annum (TCoE) Level 12.
CapeNature has been constituted in terms of the Western Cape Nature Conservation Board Act of 1998. CapeNature operates within a framework of good governance and regulatory compliance, driven by a clear strategy and strong focus on people performance. To further enhance and strengthen its position as a world leader in biodiversity conservation, this key position is available within our team.
Responsibilities:
· Ensure the cascading of the regional business plans into appropriate operational plans for the Area
· Performance manage the implementation of the Area’s operational plans to realise targets as per the approved Annual Performance Plan
· Manage: the Conservation Services component, Community conservation including Stewardship in the Area, terrestrial protected areas and various specially funded projects including Expanded Public Works Programmes
· Promotion of biodiversity education and awareness, including the promotion, establishment and management of sustainable conservation partnerships including volunteers, as well as the promotion of conservation as a catalyst for local economic development
· Promote the concept of a conservation economy to make CapeNature more relevant to society
· Manage/monitor the area’s allocated budgets
· Manage the area’s bio-physical and moveable assets and the procurement of goods and services
· Compile and submit monthly and quarterly reports as required
· Create and maintain a culture of excellence in client care among all staff
· Stakeholder management and engagement on conservation matters within the Area
Minimum requirements
· Relevant Degree in Environment Management of Natural Sciences
· At least 5 years management and biodiversity conservation sector experience
· A demonstrated understanding of biodiversity issues and their associated sectors
· An existing profile and track record of delivery in the field of biodiversity conservation, including protected area management and expansion,
· Strong leadership and management skills and ability to function as part of a team
· A sound knowledge of relevant environmental legislation
· Strong coordination and administrative management capabilities
· Experience with project monitoring and evaluation, and financial systems
· A strong command of English as a working language both written (demonstrated writing and editing skills) and spoken is essential as well as excellent communication skills in at least one other official language of the Province
· At least 5 years’ experience in managing staff and overseeing operational responsibilities of staff
· A demonstrated ability to work independently and without daily supervision and guidance
· Capacity to act as a spokesperson on biodiversity initiatives and ability to convey complex environmental issues in a powerful way to diverse audiences
· A valid code 08 driver’s license with own transport
