ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT: Communications, Resource Mobilization and Partnerships Unit Organizational Setting:The post is located in the Communications, Resource
Mobilization and Partnerships Unit of UNFPA East and Southern Africa regional office
and reports directly to the Regional Communications Adviser.
Job Purpose:
The Media Specialist will therefore:
- Support UNFPA East and Southern Africa regional office to improve the understanding and visibility of UNFPA vision, mandate and priorities, to key stakeholders and the public;
- Consolidate and strengthen strategic partnerships and networks with the media;
- Produce user-friendly materials on key thematic areas and disseminate to the media, key stakeholders, the private sector and other audience groups;
- Maintain and update the website and other social media platforms on a regular basis with input from programme staff.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with representatives of all types of media, including national, regional traditional and digital media, news networks, services and agencies, to ensure best possible coverage and profile for UNFPA mandate in the region.
- Develops creative and innovative ways to market and pitch UNFPA. Develops relationships with regional traditional and digital media, advertising agencies and other private sector partners to explore opportunities for in-kind support to visibility campaigns and resource mobilizationDrafts press releases, feature stories, briefing notes, news reports, talking points, opinion pieces and other information material on UNFPA and its work
- Writes and edits stories to ensure quality and conformity to UNFPA’s information standards and United Nations editorial and professional journalistic style, accuracy and objectivity, as well as political/cultural balance.
- Oversees the development of creative and jargon-free communication materials.
- Monitors information and services provided to traditional and digital media representatives to ensure their cooperation in promoting an accurate image of the Fund and its programmes among policy makers and the general public.
- Organizes press conferences, and other public events, as required by the Fund.
- Assist in coordinating production of advocacy booklets, brochures and other publications as needed, including ensuring quality of content and design.
- Plans and oversees editorial production, reviews manuscripts for the Organization's public information adherence to objectives and standards.
- Manages the regional website and other social media platforms, develops creative content and ensures updating of content on a regular basis.
- Carries out any other duties assigned by the Regional Communications

Job Requirements:
•Advanced university degree in mass communications, public relations or journalism;
•7 years of progressively responsible relevant professional experience in communications;
•Ability to translate technical guidelines and data into powerful communications and advocacy messaging across different contexts;
•Demonstrated experience implementing visibility communications or media projects;
•Demonstrated experience working with spokespersons and building strategic partnerships with the private sector;
•Excellent writing and editing skills, with strong analytical and research skills required;
•Thorough knowledge of web production, social media and multimedia tools;
•Proficiency in current office software applications such as In-Design, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Word and corporate IT systems;
•Excellent interpersonal communication and project
implementation;
•Ability to identify and select newsworthy materials, write journalistically and conduct or giver adio and television interviews;
•Knowledge of public relations and advocacy skills; familiarity with approaches for planning, executing and monitoring internal and/or external communications strategies and campaigns. Experience in working with UN agencies and development work preferred;
•Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and managerial skills required. Self-starter, proactive, passion for the issues.Team leader and team builder. Demonstrated willingness to work as part of a team;
•Detail oriented, sound judgment, ability to protect UNFPA’s image and interests;
•Fluency in English required and knowledge of other UN languages is an asset.
