Senior Scientific Manager Job at CapeNature in Stellenbosch


Senior Scientific Manager: Jonkershoek, Stellenbosch

CapeNature is offering the following senior management position to candidates with a combination of biodiversity conservation training and experience, as well as well-developed managerial and interpersonal skills.

Based at Scientific Services, Jonkershoek, Stellenbosch with a Salary of R737 037 per annum (TCoE) - OSD Production B.



Key Responsibilities

·       Overall strategic management of the Scientific Services Unit including regular review of the Scientific Services Five-year Strategic Plan, drafting of the Scientific Services Annual Performance Plan (APP) and monitoring of the implementation of the quarterly targets set in the APP

·       Financial management of the Scientific Services Unit including the application and implementation of CapeNature’s financial and administrative policies and procedures, preparation and management of the Scientific Services annual budget and the implementation of internal control systems according to the Public Finance Management Act and Supply Chain Management Policy

·       Human capital management of the Scientific Services Unit including daily management of office administration, occupational health and safety, and risk management, as well as the recruitment and retention of skilled staff through appropriate processes and training

·       Overall leadership in positioning the Scientific Services Unit to fulfil a leadership role in participating and providing specialist scientific decision support and input into corporate, local, regional, national and international conservation scientific and management programmes, projects and initiatives

·       Attendance of corporate meetings and workshops, Board Conservation Committee meetings, national and regional governmental meetings and workshops (for example, Environmental Affairs, Water Affairs, Mineral Resources), chairing the CapeNature Wild Animal Advisory Committee, and participating in and contributing to regional, national and international biodiversity initiatives, e.g. World Heritage Sites, IUCN, C.A.P.E., EWT, etc.



Key Requirements:

·       A Masters degree in Natural Sciences  (OSD appointment requirement)

·       10 years relevant scientific experience after BSc qualification (OSD appointment requirement)

·       Registration with SACNASP as a Professional Scientist (OSD appointment requirement)

·       Knowledge and understanding of legislation applicable to Biodiversity, Protected Areas and Environmental Issues

·       Knowledge and understanding of legislation applicable to Occupational Health and Safety

·       Knowledge and understanding of the Public Finance Management Act and Supply Chain Management

·       Good working knowledge of budgeting and expenditure control, as well as asset management

·       Demonstrated experience in personnel management

·       Computer competence (MSOffice suite)

·       Good oral and written communication, report-writing and presentation skills

·       A valid drivers’ licence, and willingness to travel regionally and nationally on a regular basis

The successful candidate will report to the Executive Director: Biodiversity Support

·       Demonstrated well-developed managerial and interpersonal skills, with an assertive and professional approach to goal-orientated and output-based staff management and career development

·       A mature, stable person with strong leadership skills, strategic thinking and a demonstrated ability to lead a team, as well as good organisational, planning and people management skills
