Conservation Services Manager: Karoo Area (Oudtshoorn)

CapeNature seeks to employ a Conservation Services Manager (Stewardship Negotiation and Extension), based in the Karoo Area (Oudtshoorn) with a Salary of R409 120 per annum (TCoE) - Level 10.

This position will seek to provide professional and integrated Stewardship extension in order to promote landowner investment and stewardship of critical habitats. This position will be responsible for negotiation of new Stewardship Contracts and provide management support for Stewardship Sites which contribute to critical habitat and protected area targets as outlined in the CapeNature Protected Area Expansion Strategy and the Lesley Hill Succulent Karroo Trust Priorities. The incumbent will form an important part of a multi-disciplinary team.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Negotiation of new Stewardship Contracts as prioritised by CapeNature and the Lesley Hill Succulent Karoo Trust in their conservation plans.

·         Development of stewardship agreements subsequent to successful negotiations

·         Preparation of management plans and conservation management audits on Stewardship sites.

·         Assist in the Implementation of the Stewardship Strategic Plan for the Area.

·         Deliver extension support to private landowners and managers of critical biodiversity and assist with the management of Stewardship sites.

·         Assist in maintaining partnerships with relevant role-players in the Area to support landscape-scale conservation initiatives

·         Assist where possible with environmental law compliance through sound environmental land-use advice to private landowners.

·         Overall management and administration related to the Stewardship Negotiator post

·         Ensure compliance with relevant policies and legislation

·         Sound financial and asset management

·         Manage relevant information systems and relevant databases

·         Share lessons and report on outcomes as required at relevant forums.



REQUIREMENTS:

·         A formal three year qualification in the field of Natural Resource Management or Biodiversity Conservation.

·         At least five years of appropriate experience

·         A valid 08 driver’s license and a willingness to drive in the region

·         Outstanding interpersonal and communicative skills in at least two languages spoken in the rural areas of the Western Cape

·         Advanced computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, and Power Point.  GIS will be an added advantage)

·         Physical fitness to perform biodiversity assessments and other field work

·         Sound report writing and presentation skills

·         The ability to work unsupervised

·         High levels of personal responsibility and accountability
